An unusual early 10.30 start and yet another lovely sunny day saw our last game of this amazing season. Unfortunately DofE had impacted us yet again with Oliver Jones-Wilkinson and Josh Jones-Wilkinson not available, but we had 13 players and a draw would guarantee us a top 4 finish.
Radcliffe started the brightest with a few early chances that could have seen us up within minutes but Riverside were putting their bodies on the line again and again to deny our strikers. Fair play to them, they muscled their way into it and on the break they looked quite dangerous.
The remainder of the half was played out with chances at both ends but nothing was falling for either team.
The second half was one of missed opportunities for Radcliffe and the longer the game went on, the more it seemed we were destined to be frustrated. Malahku Selassie had a few good attempts that just missed the target and both George Arrowsmith and Ollie skinner were unlucky to not get a clear strike at goal.
The opposition No 6 was playing a blinder and the team had a lot to thank him for in their impressive rearguard action. Fin Jackson could and should have had a penalty from a clear shirt pull in the box but nothing was given and it was clear we could play all day and Lady Luck wouldn’t let us score.
With seconds left, an almost unused Harvey Woodward saved Radcliffe’s blushes when a long ball saw their lively striker clear but Harvey came off his line and out of his box to expertly block with his chest.
Phew, that would have been a smash and grab (and last season these things seemed to be going against us)....
The whistle brought a real end of season affair to a close and we’ll take the needed point and the clean sheet.
My man of the match goes to Fin Jackson for a great display in the centre (and on the right when needed).
What a season! What a great bunch of lads...well done one and all for a fantastic year of football.
