Radcliffe Never Out of The Game But Lose 5-0

By

In a game where Radcliffe had the better of the chances and more of them to boot, how did we end up 5-0 losers...a clinical West Bridgford that’s how.

Round two and West Bridgford again for the second time in 5 days. This time on a 3G pitch with drizzle to make it nice and fast.

Radcliffe started really bright and had a number of really good chances but maybe they came too early as none of them were tucked away.

West Bridgford had passed the ball around well but hadn’t created anything until a lovely switch of play gave them a chance to cross the ball and their striker rose beautifully to head home for 1-0 (8).

Radcliffe then had their best chance of the game with a nice run and a perfectly weighted ball from Ollie Jones-Wilkinson to his brother who hit it first time...just wide.

The half ended 1-0 and Radcliffe were well in it, maybe they should have been in the lead...

Second half the boys knew it was critical who scored first. Unfortunately an almost carbon copy cross and header meant it was West Bridgford for 2-0 (46).

Goals change games though and Radcliffe should have had a great chance for the next when the Bridgford keeper came out of his area and handled when one on one with Ollie Jones-Wilkinson. The ref saw it differently though and gave a free kick to Bridgford for an apparent handball by Ollie?

Typically, from the resulting free kick, West Bridgford went up the other end and yet another header sneaked into the bottom corner for 3-0 (55).

The game was pretty much over now but Radcliffe had never looked second best, West Bridgford had just been clinical and taken every opportunity.

With only minutes left there was another that summed up our luck today...a great outstretched block by Harry Timson-Smith saved a certain goal but the ball spun and fell to their striker, only for a great last ditch challenge by Ethan Fallon to again spin off and creep into the net for 4-0 (76).

Cruelly, a minute before time a tough challenge was adjudged unfair and the resulting penalty was calmly stroked home for 5-0 (79).

Radcliffe had made more chances, tackled well and always been in the game but had run out 5-0 losers...football is a funny old game.

My man of the match goes to William Quilter for his unceasing effort and a whole host of great challenges throughout.
